Factory Tour

Take a Tour of Our Aluminum Railing Factory

Our aluminum railing systems are designed for consistent premium quality and straightforward installation. In our manufacturing plant in British Columbia, raw extrusions are laser cut, assembled into posts, pickets and rails, then run through a rigorous pre-treatment process, followed by premium powder-coating process, before final packaging and labelling and bar coding. Posts leave the building pre-assembled with brackets, and packed with all assembly fasteners, making it easier for installers on site, and for VISTA dealers to manage inventory and support their customers. Every step of the process answers to the same precision tolerances and the same quality team.

Watch the VISTA Factory Tour Video

The virtual factory tour walks our production floor with our team, moving in the same order the aluminum does: precision cutting, fabrication cells, pre-treatment line, powder booth and curing oven, then into the staging areas and the shipping dock. If you would rather read than watch, the stops below cover the same ground in writing, with the detail that matters when you are comparing one railing system against another.

Stop One: Where the Aluminum Comes From

Railing starts as an aluminum billet pushed through a hardened steel die under pressure, which is what gives a picket its shape and a post its internal wall structure. The aluminum alloys used for our railing systems have been precisely chosen for their combination of extrudability, corrosion resistance and surface quality.

Straight out of the extrusion press, the metal is soft, so profiles are quenched and then stretch straightened before they cool into their working temper. That stretch is what removes the twist and bow that would otherwise force an installer to fight a rail into place. Profile dimensions and straightness are verified before anything is used.

Stop Two: How Railing Components are Fabricated

Component profiles are precision cut to length by lasers and machined for the connections that make a railing a system rather than a pile of parts. Post walls are drilled for bracket hardware; gates are welded from the same stock as the railing they will hang besides, and stair components are cut to accept the angles a stringer presents.

Punch spacing and hole placement are confirmed against the precision die setup at the start of every run, and welds on gates and fabricated assemblies are inspected before those parts move on. Consistency at this stop is what lets a contractor pull parts from two different cartons and have them line up.

Stop Three: The Powder-Coating Process

Our finish is a premium powder coating applied through a rigorous pre-treatment and powder-coating process, and the pre-treatment half of that phrase is doing most of the work. Bare aluminum coming off a fabrication line carries cutting oils, fines, and handling residue, and powder will not bond durably to any of it. The pre-treatment line strips those contaminants in a heated acidic bath, then through three separate rinses, followed by a dip in a special conversion coating solution. Then the components are dried in an oven completely before they reach the powder booth.

Premium powder is then applied electrostatically, so the charged particles wrap around edges and into the corners. This ensures an even coating over the entire surface. Parts are then rolled into a curing oven where the powder gels, cross links, and hardens into a continuous film. Powder finishes are graded by the AAMA performance specifications, with the high performance tier built on super durable polyester resins that hold colour and gloss under sustained UV exposure. That cured film is what makes our railing a wash down product instead of a repainting project, and it goes on in our standard colour range before anything ships. Coating thickness and cure are checked on coated parts, along with adhesion and colour match against the standard.

Stop Four: Shipping Posts Pre-Assembled

Posts leave our warehouses already coated and factory pre-assembled, which is one of the reasons our systems install faster than most alternatives. There is no welding, priming, or painting left to do on site, and nothing about the finish depends on job site weather. Gates arrive with their latch, catch, and hinge hardware in the box. Cable Rail orders ship with marine grade type 316 stainless steel cable and fittings. All shipments are carefully reviewed and scanned through our warehouse system to ensure each shipment is accurate and complete when it leaves the dock.

Stop Five: How Finished Railings are Stocked and Shipped

Finished, packaged product moves to our stocking racks, organized by system and colour so that a dealer or distributor order is picked from ready stock rather than manufactured to order. Packing protects the finish in transit. We sell through a stocking dealer network in Canada, and displaying dealer network in the USA, which is also where our customers can see and handle the product before they buy it.

Tested Against the National Building Code

Our aluminum railing systems are independently tested and certified to meet or exceed the National Building Code requirements for guard rails, with test reports covering the regional code variations available on our website.

I purchase many different types of items in the building industry and have been at all levels from putting away lumber, customer service management and purchasing at wholesale level. The Vista railing company by far has been the best company to deal with in my entire 41 years in the industry. It’s just unbelievable the support and quality they produce from all levels — from manufacturing, pulling the product, design team and of course the sales support. Railing is a very difficult item for some yards to sell due to the complexity, but Vista makes it real easy with the least complicated quoting system, the Vista planner.
Thank you Team Vista for all you do for me and the industry!!
